Festina Lente

Festina Lente is an old oxymoron that means “make haste slowly.” It is a motto that several historical figures have adopted, such as Augustus, Titus, Medicis and the Onslows. The symbol of the dolphin and anchor has been used with the motto since Roman times. It was also used as the printer’s mark of Aldus. Festina Lente was the inspiration for words on the mural: “That which has been done well has been done quickly enough.” The mural hangs in the Southern Utah University Letterpress Studio. It serves as a reminder that though handmade processes may take more time, the resulting quality is well worth the added time and effort. The sign was hand painted with One Shot sign painter’s paint and is approximately 4 ft x 6 ft.
